I haven’t had much desire to create but I want to have that desire again so I forced myself to start small (very small) this evening. Here is a goldfish that looks quite angry, doesn’t he? I wonder why. One of those silly questions to start conversation when my kids were younger was “would you rather be a bird or a fish?” I said fish. Birds have the ability to move in 3 dimensions as do fish, but birds have to work hard to do so. Fish have it easy because of the buoyancy of water. I think it would be nice to just float around all day and not get prune-y.
It is hard to come back to my blog after a difficult hiatus. I am sadden to tell you that my mother, Julia Evatt, died July 12. Her battle with pancreatic cancer didn’t last long enough to even call it a battle. It was barely a struggle. My mother didn’t loose though, she won, because she is now in perfect peace. But she was my best critic and I will miss her comments here among many other things. She was an accomplished writer/poet and artist. I hope you don’t mind me sharing her work as I discover more of it. Here is a poem from her journal in 2006. I think she would be fine with me sharing it with you…

She will be forever dearly missed. Words couldn’t even begin to explain how much her love/care impacted our lives. . . We are eternally grateful & blessed to be a part of your family.

Laura, I understand your loss. My Mother died 6 years ago, and the hole in my heart has been filled with her prescence in my memories. Your loss is very profound now but it will ease as you realize that she hasn’t really left you, she lives on in your memories. And,the fish is beautiful.

My Mom passed on in December last year so I can so relate to how you feel. She loved art and crafts but in the last 6 years she couldn’t really participate anymore and I so missed doing things with her. But I have her watercolours to remind me and you have her poems.

That’s such an honest and beautiful poem. It brought tears to my eyes. You are so lucky she has left you these little gifts behind. My mother could be a great artist, but she has no faith in her abilities and has never finished a single piece. All she does is stress over the stock market. Anyway, thank you for sharing so much, including your insecurities. I think your work is great and you make it look so easy. I also wonder (unlike you though, for good reason) if I’m an “artist.” Sometimes I feel like I’m wasting my time, especially when I start looking at what’s out there, including looking at your art! It’s so cruel of ourselves to always try to fit into some category anyway, like “artists.” Just love what you do and don’t put a name on it. Take care.
